Tremont Avenue is an Express station served by all trains on the Concourse Subway Line, with three tracks and two island platforms. Peak Direction rush hour Express D trains stop on the middle track opening their doors to the platform operating in the direction the train is traveling.

The station was the only station on the Concourse line (other than 161 Street-Yankee Stadium) to have a rehabiltion before 2016 with this occuring in 2000 as a plaque says on the mezzanine wall. The renovated station had it's wall tiles replaced which have the same colored maroon trim with a narrow black border on the platform walls and maroon pillars. "Tremont" is written one line under the trim in an unusual font that only seems to be duplicated at Canal Street on the 8th Avenue Line, which was renovated during a similar time period.

The station once opened with a full length mezzanine connecting both station exits but during the renovation the mezzanine was fully split into two with each exit at each end of the station having two staircases down to each platform in a small mezzanine area within fare control with access to the rest of the mezzanine walled off, although an emergency use staircase leads up from the middle of each platform to it. Peeping up, light is visible illiminating the closed mezzanine as well as blue pillars, not the maroon ones that line the platforms.

The full time station entrance is located at the southern end of the station, here the turnstiles lead short passageways east and west that have short intermediate staircasese before streetstairs lead up to the NE, NW and SW corners of the Grand Concourse and Eco Place. There is also a short turnnel that is closed off by a door that once led to the northern footpath of the Tremont Avenue underpass beneath Fordham Road, with this entrance closed there are no exits directly to Tremont Avenue, just one block north at Echo Place. Today the roadways have been widened in the Tremont Avenue underpass removing the sidewalks and the walls rebuilt removing any evidence of the former subway entrance.

The secondary station exit is at the northern end of the platforms, here the small still open to the public mezzanine area contains three High Entrance/Exit Turnstiles and short passageways (with intermediate staircases) to the NE and SW corners of 179 Street and the Grand Concourse
