Indiana is located on a brief stretch of east-west running of the Green Line, where trains coming from downtown curve east a few blocks before continuing south. It was once an important transfer point for the Stockyards Branch (continuing west) and the Englewood Branch (continuing east). These were relegated to only shuttle service to and from Indiana in 1949 with all through services discontinued, both branches closed in 1957 (Full History). The station itself has two side platforms. They are canopied for their eastern (southern halves) and the western ends are exposed. The platforms have two exits. One is right in the middle (at the end of the canopy). Here a staircase leads down from each platform before curving inward beneath the el and meeting at street level to a single high exit only turnstile surrounded by tall fencing on the west side of Indiana Avenue just south of 40th Street. Across the street is the main station house, a modern building located along the east side of the street. Here are the turnstiles followed by a staircase and then an elevator up to the extreme eastern end of each platform. The platforms are noticeably wider at this portion of the platform.
