University Heights station is located on the banks of the Harlem River. The station is under the University Heights Bridge, where 207th Street crosses the Harlem River and becomes Fordham Road.
Reaching the station is treturous and dangerous, one must cross the Major Deegan's Exit 9 Fordham Road, and cross a number of different lanes of traffic. There are traffic lights but cars don't seem to yield as they zip of the highway. Train service to
the station is limited with trains once an hour, and a few more during peak hours.
The station is currently under construction with the normal station island platform south of Fordham Road closed. The elevator to the station platform is closed as well. This entrance was also along the sidewalk that continues over the University Heights Bridge and into Manhattan (the University
Heights bridge only has a footpath on its southside). The current temperary platform is wooden with no benches along it and one station sign. It is also short meaning only the first two cars open. There is also a small wooden awning on the platform that gards the station's one daily ticket
Vending Machine. When I visited the station I walked over the Bridge from Manhattan and in order to reach the station safely (I was also fallowing the "Use Crosswalk signs") I had to cross the Degan Exit Ramps twice and Cedar Avenue, in order to get to a traffic light to cross Fordham Road.
Update: As of Late 2005: The new station platform south of Fordham Road has reopened, it has a very similar layout to it's sister station Morris Heights less than a mile south down the Harlem River, with an entrance area where the TVM is, an elevator fallowed by a staircase down to the platform.
