The Rolling Stock of the Long Island Rail Road

The LIRR has a total of 1,092 rail cars* rolling.
The LIRR's electrical fleet: is currently going under change with the new M-7s being delivered. This contract is combind with Metro-North. 644 cars have been ordered*. M-3s purchaced in 1984-86 are currently beggining there mid-life overhalls. The M-7s will replace non recently overhalled M-1s. All M-1s will be retired by 2010. All electrical cars except the M-7s have half-cabs only with railfan front windows. I overheard a driver saying "It's like working in a closit."

The Non-electrified lines (in Suffolk mainly includes:
Ronkonkoma-Greenport, all of the Montauk Branch, Port Jefferson-Huntington, all of the Oyester Bay Branch), currently all lines use new bi-level (C-3) cars that have a locomotive on one end. These coaches are hybrids. They can run on deasel fuel or third-rail. Although never done it would be possable to have a one seat ride from Penn Station to Montauk (The forthest in they currently come in is Hunderspoint Ave and Long Island City). These new trains replaced old deasals and coaches in bad condition from the 1950s. Do to platform lenthghts these train are often sort, with only two cars running from Ronkonkoma-Greenport (See Mattituck). The C-3s and the M-7s have computer generated sounding recordings and displays both say: "This is the train to (destination)" or "The next stop is" or "This station is". It has a very limited vocabulary. 300 M-7s are also going to Metro-North (Hudson and Harlem Lines only. No cars are being retrofitted with pantographs)
