179 Street was renovated relatively recently, but before the MTA started to restore old name tablets. It was part of the original IRT. Most of the station has the boring 1950s extension look. A tiny portion of the wall still has three or four original station fixtures. It is hard to photograph the old name tablets because there are in a small two foot wide passageway before fare control that connects the exit on the north side of 79 Street to the turnstiles. There is a high exit gate next to the staircase. There is no over or underpass of course.
