33 Street is a very interesting original IRT station. The station was recently renovated. The northern portion is the original 1904 station and has been restored, the southern portion the 1950s extension style.
The original portion of the station has very high ceilings and the eagle ceramic reliefs. They are at the top on the two floor high ceiling that also still has much of the original molding. The portion also has replicas of the original light fixtures except with more efficient lighting. Like most original IRT stations there is no mezzanine and no free transfer between directions. The columns are painted green.

The extension of the station begins at about the fourth car (from the north), it is not a boring as other extension the name tablets are the same and there is the tan brick section, there is a green border at the top next to the ceiling. The ceiling is normal height, the trim has simple white on blue 33s mosaics, the columns are tiled white with a bit of tan on the top. There is a high entrance/exit gates to 32 Street. There are vents at the southernmost point of the platform.

The tracks north of the station: The express tracks in the station are significantly lower then the local, this is because just north of the station is one of the few locations on the original IRT that the cut and cover method was not used here. There is a deep bore tunnel under what was a trolley tunnel and what is now the vehicle tunnel under Grand Central. There are two tunnels one for the local and express tracks for each direction. The tunnels are obvious since there are no columns in them and there is a curved ceiling, just before the station local trains go up a steep incline into the station.
