Roosevelt Island was the highlight of the 63 Street Line and the new tunnel. It connects the long and narrow island in the East River with the rest of the city. It is the second deepest subway station. (191 Street (1,9) is first) Before the station opened in 1989 residents had to take a bus/drive trough Queens and on to the Queensboro bridge which is just south of the station. That was until the 1970s when the Tramway was built. The tramway is one of the few urban tramways in the world. At first it was to be temporary until the subway was built, do to its success with Islanders and Tourists it is now permanent. Old subway tokens are still the only way to pay the $2.00 fare; it is not connected to the subway. The station is located in a southern portion of the island.
Fare control is on street level in a small station house. There are a few benches, turning right; there are elevators to each side platform on each side of the three escalators and a staircase down to the trains. I then started down the two long escalators. There is a ten foot gap between them for no apparent reason. The second bank is much smaller then the first. All ceilings except in the station house are curved a bit.

The large lower mezzanine is now reached. There is a escalator (in each direction) and a staircase for each of the platforms. The platforms are visible from here in a four foot gab between the railings and the wall when the platform roof gets lower.

(rooseveltf5) Looking across at the escalators to street on the lower mezzanine at Roosevelt Island (F) (rooseveltf6) Throughout the station lighting is from red cylinders hanging from the ceiling at Roosevelt Island (F), here it is the mezzanine (rooseveltf7) On an edge of the lower mezzanine the platform and tracks are visible at Roosevelt Island (F), here it is the mezzanine (rooseveltf8) Looking down the second set of escalators at Roosevelt Island (F)

I then walk down to a side platform. The ceiling is domed throughout, lighting is throughout from red cylinders hanging from it. There are police booths at either end of the platforms on opposite sides since the station is on an island. The mezzanine is at almost the exact middle of the platform. The elevators that come directly down from the station house are at the second to last car (coming from Manhattan). There is a 2 foot high wall (Like at 21 Street, the next stop) in the middle between the tracks, there are no pillars, except near the mezzanine.
