Symbolic Message

Signal, 1997
By Mel Chn in collaboration with Seneca tribe member Peter Jemison

These consist of what are supposed to be lighted campfires beneath the support pillars (the lights were out when I took these photos) and mosaics depicting outstretched hands of the Tribes of the Six Nations at what has been even since pre-European times a busy crossroads for trade above the station.

Signals Symbolic Message reads:
"Six figures join hands representing the Six Nations of the Haudenosaunee (Iroquois Confederacy) the original inhabitants of what is today New York State. We continue to occupy portions of our original territories.

We are united by a message of Peace, Power and Righteousness which was brought to us by the Peacemaker 1000 years ago.

Our unity has been strained by historic circumstances over the last 220 years yet the Confederacy remains intact.

Treaties made with the United States over 200 years ago are still recognized

the SIX Nations"
