34 Street-Penn Station is an express stop but has no island platforms. Instead the local has side platforms and the A express shares an island platform. It was built this way to discourage transferring between subway lines since connections are avalable to the station for Amtrak, NJ Transit and the Long Island R.R. (There are two other stations like it: 34 Street-Penn Station/7 Avenue(1,2,3,9) and Atlantic Avenue(2,3,4,5). There are exits to 34 Street at the northern end. An underpass connects. There is a large lower level mezzanine near 32nd Street to the Underground Penn Station. The tracks are built with the locals platforms being parralell with each other and ending at the same places. Both Express tracks' platforms run slightly farter north. They are also off each other by a shorter car (34a16).
