Washington/Wells is the second newest station on the loop and opened on July 17, 1995 to combine two stations, Randolph/Wells and Madison/Wells. The station has two wooden side platforms that have a box canopy that requires no supports on the platform but has trusses that cross over the top of the tracks, with just a small opening near the middle of the tracks. There are windscreens along the portion of the canopy above the station entrance that fully enclose with except for glass windows. Otherwise there is a modern white fence. The main station entrance is here, just north of the middle of the platforms. Here a staircase and elevator lead down to a wide and open fare control area beneath the tracks, a free cross under is provided and the station is an important transfer point. The elevator's white tower shafts both extend down to the street, but there is just one street elevator in the Inner Loop in the inner loop shaft down to the west side of Wells Street. The stop is named Washington Street but it is actually beyond the northern end of the platform, starting from the southern end past fare control (just north of the alley Calhoun Place) is the street elevator, followed by a staircase to each side of the street and then two up escalators enclosed by glass up from each side of the street. Right by these escalators is a second more narrow exit only staircase down from each platform, these both lead down to High Turnstiles along the mezzanine. There is a secondary exit from each platform at their extreme southern ends. Here a high exit turnstile on each platform leads down to a street stair down to each side of Wells Street just south of Madison Street.
